Ways Camping is Proven to Elevate Mental Health

In A Van Down by the River!!

Okay admittedly it was a creek, still you see what I did there. After some hard knocks, mental health has become a big part of my life. I love that what was once a taboo topic can now be freely discussed to support each other. Consequently, I want to share how camping is a great way to reset and offers many mental health benefits. These photos and takeaways from my recent Pacific Northwest camping trip are just a few examples. Enjoy!

Disconnecting from Electronic Devices

Wireless service is scarce when camping in the Pacific Northwest. It is invigorating to disconnect, untether from your device, and just be present in nature and the moment. We ran into an amazing camping site in Oregon’s scenic Tillamook forest that offered just that. It is no surprise, per Firstresponders-wellness.com, that you can reduce stress and anxiety by disconnecting from technology. After feeling the benefits, disconnecting has become a part of my routine.

Promotes Happiness and Tranquility

Camping allows you to escape life’s chaos and reflect on what’s important. Being surrounded by nature can make you feel grounded and promotes serenity and calmness. It was practically hypnotic listening to the water trickling over the creek rocks by our campsite. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), nature can improve mental health and sharpen cognition. I can vouch that I feel rejuvenated after my recent camping trip!

Physical Fitness

According to health.gov, physical activity has many well-established mental health benefits. This includes improved brain health and cognitive function. Camping offers many options for physical activities. Our campsite had several walking trails and creek access for hiking and exploring. As the night approached, we scavaged for firewood left behind at nearby campsites. We had the most lit campfire! Camping elevates mental health since physical activity is often an unintentional byproduct.

Unity and Connecting

Camping is a great way to build relationships and bond with your tribe. It promotes unity and security, nurturing mental health. From planning your trip to setting up camp, there are many ways to create comradery camping. Sitting by a campfire and telling stories is such good medicine. Psychology Today states that interacting with others boosts feelings of well-being.

Restful Sleep

Nighttime is my favorite part of camping, especially on a clear and starry night. Oregon’s Tillamook forest at night is enchanting. We backed our van facing the creek and opened the back doors. It was so calming to be surrounded by the babbling brook and hear birds chirping as we went to bed. Consequently, falling and staying asleep came easy. Before setting out to camp, it’s essential to have your sleeping plans in order; otherwise, it could be a not-so-restful night.

In Conclusion

Camping offers many mental health benefits. Disconnecting from electronic devices reduces stress and promotes better sleep. Being surrounded by nature brings serenity and calmness. Camping has several options for physical activities, elevating mental health. Camping is also a great way to bond and build relationships. I hope this article entices you to go camping and see firsthand how the outdoors can positively impact your mental health. Check out my gallery to view more camping trip pics. Until next time…TTFN!!
